Another Sappy Breakup Song

By now I'm sure you're tired of reading a blog about country music from me. However, with the topic of gender in music, I do not think that I would be able to analyze any other music genre other than counrty music. So with that being said, let's dive into how gender has not only affected the country genre world, but has also shaped it to what it is today.  (I have placed both sets of lyrics below!)

I'd like to start my blog with The song I got the boy by Jana Kramer. Not only is Jana Kramer's I got the boy A perfect example of gender within the country music genre, but it is also an example of that heartbreak type of country music that we see so often. This song is about high school sweethearts and how she was so many of his first. However, now he has just been newly married to someone else. This song speaks of those ways and relationships that someone is always going to be your first and you’ll forever be with someone whether you like to remember it or not. we see this throughout the song we lyrics such as “I got the first kiss and you’ll get his last'', “ you’ve got his future, but I’ve got his past”, “i’ve got his class ring but you’ve got the diamond in the wedding band”, and finally one of the most important lyrics “because I’ve got the boy and you’ve got the man”. Not only does the song talk about how it will always be someone’s first. But it also explains how time heals any situation and we can almost see her being graceful and accepting of their relationship even though it might be tough to watch. We see this in the first few lyrics played throughout the song. “I saw your picture in the paper, honeymoon and in Jamaica. She’s a lucky girl. You look so grown up in your black tux, from a ball cap and a pick up. It seems like another world.” Yet, when you hear the lyrics “if things were different I had a choice which would I choose?” might make people think differently against my opinion of her accepting of the new relationship. However if you listen throughout the rest of the song it never says what she would’ve chosen. This I believe is left this way so that each listener can relate to the song and create an ending that they see fit.

As I wrap this up, I'd like to stray away from lyric meaning, I believe that Jana Kramer specifically helped shape the country music genre with this song. I got the boy came out in 2015 which I am sure had its ups and downs, not as bad as 2020 though LOL. However, the lead way that has broken open Country music has been female artists. Another great example is Kasey Musgraves with her album Golden hour. Throughout her album she has a multitude of songs that all speak about different things. But if you know anything about Kasey Musgraves you know that she’s not afraid to go out there just a little bit. If you’d like to understand what I mean by that I’ll leave her song follow your arrow down below I think that will explain it!

I Got The Boy - Jana Kramer

I saw your picture in a paper

Honeymoon in Jamaica, she's a lucky girl

You look so grown up in your black tux

From a ball cap in a pick up, seems like another world

You and me and our big dreams, falling in love

We were two kids in the backseat, all fearless and young

I got the first kiss and she'll get the last

She's got the future, I got the past

I got the class ring, she got the diamond and wedding band

I got the boy, she got the man

Yeah there's an old you that I knew,

Fake IDs to get into those spring break bars

Back woods on a four wheel, hanging on tight

I can still feel my racing heart

And now you're cleaned up with a haircut, nice tie and shoes

If things were different and I had a choice, which would I choose?

I got the first kiss and she'll get the last

She's got the future and I got the past

I got the class ring, she got the diamond and wedding band

I got the boy and she got the man

I got the first kiss and she'll get the last

We each got something, the other will never have

I got the long hair, hot head

She got the cool and steady hand

I got the boy and she got the man

I got the boy and she got the man

Follow Your Arrow - Kasey Musgraves

If you save yourself for marriage

You're a bore

You don't save yourself for marriage

You're a horrible person

If you won't have a drink

Then you're a prude

But they'll call you a drunk

As soon as you down the first one

If you can't lose the weight

Then you're just fat

But if you lose too much

Then you're on crack

You're damned if you do

And you're damned if you don't

So you might as well just do

Whatever you want

So, make lots of noise

Kiss lots of boys

Or kiss lots of girls

If that's something you're into

When the straight and narrow

Gets a little too straight

Roll up a joint, or don't

Just follow your arrow

Wherever it points, yeah

Follow your arrow

Wherever it points

If you don't go to church

You'll go to hell

If you're the first one on the front row

You're self-righteous son of a-

Can't win for losin'

You 'll just disappoint 'em

Just 'cause you can't beat 'em

Don't mean you should join 'em

So, make lots of noise

Kiss lots of boys

Or kiss lots of girls

If that's something you're into

When the straight and narrow

Gets a little too straight

Roll up a joint, or don't

Just follow your arrow

Wherever it points, yeah

Follow your arrow

Wherever it points

Say what you think (Say what you think)

Love who you love (Love who you love)

'Cause you just get so many trips 'round the sun

Yeah, you only

Only live once

So make lots of noise

Kiss lots of boys

Or kiss lots of girls

If that's what you're into

When the straight and narrow

Gets a little too straight

Roll up a joint, I would

And follow your arrow

Wherever it points, yeah

Follow your arrow

Wherever it points

  1. Awesome blog. You talked about two songs that are complete opposites. I've heard both before, but never read the lyrics. Thank you for writing them out. Country is your strong suit, so keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
